I moved 50,000 files, totaling about 500GB to the drive to confirm that everything was working, and then fired up Lightroom and had it 'add' a year's worth of pictures to it's catalog. Everything worked fine. I then booted up Ubuntu to confirm that Ubuntu could see and access the disk, and it did so without any issues. While I did not benchmark the unit, it's speed seemed typical of other hard drives. That is, while much slower than a SSD, is plenty fast enough for photo storage. The unit has only a very small disk activity LED on the front of the unit. There are no other lights on the unit. When you first add the unit to a Windows system, the drive will appear in the 'Desktop' view of the File Manager. Normally File Manager defaults to showing you the 'Quick Access' - Frequent Folders and Recent Files view. The unit isn't silent - no hard disk drive is - and it does make sounds when it's spinning the disk platters up to speed after 'sleeping' and when the disk is moving the disk heads to read or write a file. The rest of the time the unit is essentially silent. It's safe to say that this disk is nosier than any disk I've had before (it's also a LOT bigger than any disk I've had before), but the sounds this unit makes are no louder than everyday background office noises. Personally, I don't find them objectionable. I am pleased with the 16TB Seagate One Touch Hub I purchased. But it was a false peace of mind. Only 2 weeks after using the Acronis backup software, my computer was crashing shortly after bootup, which it had never done before. So I thought I would test the new drive and backup. After rebooting with the Acronis USB Boot drive, it asked for the location of the image file. The computer recognized the WD drive with all of the Acronis backup folders. But then the Acronis software said all of the folders were empty and there was No Image found. WTF?! Acronis said it successfully made a full disk copy. But then the software could not find its own image. DO NOT USE the ACRONIS software. I was fortunately able to fix the boot/crash problem using other software. But if my hard drive had completely failed, I would not have a usable backup copy to restore to a new drive. I would have been screwed. It would have been better if I never attempting to create a backup. At least I would known that I didn't have a backup copy to rely on, rather than falsely thinking I was protected. In addition, the \"free\" software isn't really free. It's only a 30 day free Trial version. So if you make a full backup within 30 days, and later have a critical problem, you will be forced to purchase the full version to perform the restore. The backup file versions are propitiatory, so you can't use another brand of software to do the restore. They've got you! You can make a free backup/copy (if you can even get the software to work properly). But then you have to pay for the software to actually use the Backup in order to Restore. This is akin Ransomware. I have since purchased other backup/imaging software and made a full (working) backup to my new WD drive. I'm very happy about that.\nReview: Good drives. Have used before. Was working fine, then gone :( Contacted Seagate and have all the required details to return it to Holland. Now to find a box and 4 inches of foam! Seagate have told me they will attempt recovery of the files and put to a new internal hard drive and replace this drive. Seems fair enough and also warned it could take 6 weeks or more. I have software that can recover a failed drive but it was unable to read an awful lot of files so purchase EASEUS Data recovery (using a discount code for £75 lifetime licence with updates for life) and this was a life saver. Bought another 8TB internal Seagate drive from desertcart to transfer the files to. All going well. There are a few files that have been damaged but can download them again. The concern is why these files are damaged. They seem to be 'scattered' parts of files with no details of what or who they belonged to. Had no problems at all with customer service, used the main Seagate website to contact support. One single adviser who was very good. Edit: 07/09/2024 Reformatted drive. Drive initially very slow to transfer files and I mean like 1.2mbps, really slow. Decided to move disk across to my smaller Windows 11 computer which I also purchased some time ago from desertcart, Nipogi, it has not missed a beat since and works very fast. Downside is there must be a USB controller problem on my old desktop. Decided against returning the drive to Seagate as I got all the files off perfectly with the EaseUS software.\nReview: Great storage but low speeds - This is a very nice piece of kit. The good point being the large storage capacity but don't expect the world when it comes to speed as it doesn't read data at anywhere near the speeds of my SSD .
