"Beautiful and deftly written and intimate and searing in its honesty, Anish’s is a quest to conquer the trail and her own inner darkness." -- Foreword Reviews "Filled with ruminative self-reflection, soaring natural descriptions and delightful accounts of the gracious, life-sustaining 'trail magic' of hiking culture, Thirst is a testament to human endurance, inspiring to hikers and non-hikers alike." -- Shelf Awareness "A refreshingly candid account of how an average person can harness a steadfast determination to achieve the spectacular." ― Outside Named "50 Best Hiking Books of all Time" by BACKPACKER MAGAZINE By age twenty-five, Heather Anderson had hiked the Appalachian, Pacific Crest, and Continental Divide Trails--a combined distance of nearly eight thousand miles with a vertical gain of more than one million feet. Then, feeling it was time to settle down, Heather retired from long-distance hiking, married, and started a career. But her urge for wilderness was too strong, and she realized that nothing could replace the comfort she found while hiking. Her marriage crumbled. She quit her job. And she walked back into the mountains. In Thirst: 2600 Miles to Home , Heather, whose trail name is "Anish," explores her motivations in returning to the trail--and to her record-setting success on the PCT when she hiked 40-plus miles a day, often walking late into the night by glow of a headlamp, and facing down rattlesnakes, mountain lions, bears, raging rivers, snow, and lightning. She shares her joy in leaving behind a mundane life, and amid the rigors of the trail--the pain, fear, loneliness, and dangers--she discovers the greater rewards of both community and self-fulfillment. She learns that setting records is merely a catalyst, teaching her how to live a life of courage, confidence, and purpose. Review: A Honest Tale of a Record Breaking Walk - I have read books like this before... A hero that didn't want to be one. A anti-hero is someone who does great things but won't accept the rewards of being a hero. What she did was amazing. Walking the Pacific Crest Trail in a record time. She also wrote a wonderfully honest and colorful book about her travels. Most journeys are difficult, however most books that you read about them make appear as if it was easy. But they are not. A record becomes a record due to being difficult to impossible. This was a journey of the heart in which she kindly share this difficult tale with us. Her journey was an exceptional tale of willpower, sprinkled with the joy of walking. I wish her well. She is an exceptional person... thank you for a book that absorb me into another place for a time, just a walk up a long trail. I am glad you wrote another Book Review: Such a great memoir about the PCT and self-discovery! - "Thirst: 2600 Miles to Home" is an incredibly gripping and poignant memoir that chronicles Heather "Anish" Anderson's record-breaking hike along the Pacific Crest Trail. Through vivid prose and raw emotion, Anderson shares her harrowing journey of self-discovery and endurance as she navigates the challenges of the trail and confronts her inner demons. While the book is a relatively quick read, the depth of insight and emotional resonance found within its pages is truly remarkable. Anderson's candid reflections on her struggles and triumphs make for a compelling and inspiring narrative that resonates long after the final page is turned. Whether you're an avid hiker or simply a fan of compelling memoirs, "Thirst" is a must-read that will leave you breathless with its beauty and authenticity.

Loved this book but it’s way too short
I’ve been reading a lot of through hike books lately, craving adventure from the comfort of my couch. I’ve also been inspired to start hiking and I’m thinking about trying backpacking. I loved the journey that Anish undertook and her incredible devotion and commitment to the trail. I’m so impressed with the records that she holds. Her journey, her writing, was all top notch – five stars. I knocked one star off this review only because the book is only 200 pages long. It left me wanting much more.

Hearteningly real, humorous, and inspiring.
This book found its way into my heart and soul, especially as I read it aloud to my family of whom my 10 and 7 year old niece and nephew were most enthralled aside from me to learn the every move of Anish on her 2600 mile journey. This book not only enlightens you to the delightfully diverse terrain and sights of the PCT trail through the eyes of Anderson but it carries with it humor, soul, vulnerability, and truth that mirrors, I imagine, all great feats and life-changing journeys. I was pulled in time and again by this beautifully vivid and delightfully real narrative and yet, slowed down my reading so as not to finish so quickly. If you wish to be inspired, read this. If you wish to fill your heart up with honest to goodness tale of greatness, read this. If you want to see yourself change, find hope, seek your truer self, please, just read this, okay? Just read this. And to you, Heather Anderson—Anish—thank you. You don’t know how much.

unforgettable
An excellent book, well written, and interesting fascinating every page. Moved fast. Described what it takes overcoming fears and self doubt to push oneself to the limits of endurance. The joys the author felt every moment experiencing the wilderness, wild animals, joy in trees, rocks, sky’s at night, high peaks. A book I will never forget. I’ve learned many things.

Mental and Physical challenges of long thru hikes.
Book is good diary of Anish accomplishment. She is obviously one of our top endurance athletes. This fact is supported by her selection for Nat’l Geographic 2019 athletes list. More important to me is the information that may shed light on why people and Heather particularly choose to engage in these non supported Trail challenges. The main challenge to me is days/months isolated and alone.

Wonderful story
What a great adventure story! You feel like you are on the journey. The pain, the fear and the excitement as she conquers, snakes, cougars, bears and questionable humans! Great strength and willpower keep her going and I am so glad she completed what she set out to do! Well written and I hope there will be more to follow!

Interesting read
If you are getting in to multiple day hiking this easy read may be of use, I am new to hiking and I learnt from reading this book my background stresses about the importance of water and hydration, this book demonstrates it, as well as not neading top end gear
