Crosman 2240 Bolt Action Single-Shot .22 Caliber CO2 Air Pistol - 460 FPS – Black

I had one already (over ten years old) so I already knew about it's accuracy and I wanted another CO2 pellet gun to train my daughter (6). I looked at every pellet gun on Amazon and the 2240 had all the features I wanted. I needed a single shot bolt action (new shooter safety) I needed a platform that I could modify to the purpose (10 meter training open sight). I wanted a platform that was fully supported with a range of upgrades I could implement as my little Olympic Shooter improved. Out of the box the gun needs some love. Apparently Crosman has dialed down their quality control a few notches. The barrel had no crown! Just lopped off with a rough sanding then dumped into the bluing...sad really...because what sets this gun apart is it's potential for extreme accuracy (with a properly manufactured barrel). Out of the box the trigger feels sloppy and gritty and the cocking action is stiff and gritty. This is when it helps to like tinkering...all you need to do is some amateur gunsmithing...polish and deburr...clean an lube...and the action can be dialed in to feel like a real gun, And of course there is the fun of actually shooting it...and if you are a marksman you will be very disappointed if you receive a barrel with no crown that is incapable of tight groups. The barrel on my old 2240 was vastly superior...shooting the guns side by side ti became clear my little markswoman would be receiving my older more accurate gun so she could actually learn how to group her shots. I decided to take the new 2240 and upgrade it. First improvement a 14.5: barrel from the factory with a perfect crown. That was the best money spent on the gun...even with the plastic breech the shot groupings improved. Plastic on a target pistol annoys me so I made my own grips. Then I decided to try out a steel breech. It's a big expense...costs as much as the gun itself...but it turned out to be a good decision. Shot groups are much better than with the plastic breech. The gun is so much fun to play with and modify I decided to make my own removable stock, but TBH the 1399 Backpacker is a great stock for the money. With the stock the "carbine" begged a proper scope. To take advantage of the greater range of the optics I installed a stiffer hammer spring and modified the power valve to increase flow and charge capacity. At this point I am able to shoot about 25 shots per cartridge out to 75 yards and hit a 6" steel, or I can put pellet after pellet through a single ragged hole at about 15 yards. Once you get rid of all the plastic bits the gun is much nicer...but out of the box it it a fun plinker. The main reason this gun sells so well is because it is a great platform and can be upgraded into a several hundred dollar match pistol or even a carbine.

Did my research. Decided I’d go with this one for rodent problems as well as a plinker. This thing packs a punch. Noise level is not too loud. It’s not quiet though. Kinda what you’d expect from a CO2. Remarkably accurate. I’ve only shot at about 20 yards, but yeah. It’s on. Definitely a good quality build and can be upgraded like crazy. Good tool to have for sure. Pellets embedded deep into a scrap of 1 x 4 when I ‘tested’. Ready to rock right out of the box. I was pretty impressed. This thing is no joke, not a toy by any means. Treat as you would any pew. Safety first! Overall excellent.

As many people's introduction to the world of airgunning, the Crosman 2240 represents a solid value today as it has since its introduction in 1998. Well made in America by Americans from American material, this product stands out in the vast inventory of products made overseas. This is a solid pistol, made mostly of metal. It is very simple to operate (especially if you FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS) and extremely accurate. It is more than capable of knocking over row after row of pop cans at 10 meters (33ft.) and is powerful enough to function as a pest controller within that distance on vermin such as starlings, pigeons, mice and rats. It is single-shot and also has a manual safety, has no recoil and doesn't make much noise. It does not require pumping. As such it is ideal for teaching kids basic firearms handling, usage and safety. It also is hard for adults to put down. It accepts standard 12-gram Co2 powerlets (each good for up to 30-35 powerful shots) and Crosman Premier 14.3gr. pellets are a perfect match for this gun. Both are also available through Amazon.com as well as Walmart and most sporting goods stores. Remember that this is a CO2 powered arm and that velocities fall off once the ambient air temperature falls below 70 degrees Fahrenheit. It will not perform very well outdoors in winter temperatures. Right out of its bubble packaging, it is great big cheap fun HOWEVER you will soon discover that this is also the basic Crosman system upon which thousands of enthusiasts perform endless modifications to regulate power, convert to HPA (High Pressure Air) or bulk Co2, or just make look very very awesome. There are literally dozens of companies offering everything from modification parts and systems to full-custom guns. Whether you purchase this pistol as the beginning of a fascinating and addictive hobby, to teach your youngster how to safely handle firearms, pest control in the barn that won't freak out the cows or simply provide hours of inexpensive plinking fun for yourself and/or your family and friends, $50 (or $56 at its price today, DELIVERED) is $$ well spent.

It packs a wallop for a CO2 pistol, has a nice weighty balance to it, obliterates pop cans at 10 yards, and groups well shooting offhand with iron sights at the same distance. Can you really ask for more in a plinking pistol? The plastic grips are absolute trash, so I ding a star off for that, but it's hard to be too upset seeing as how this pistol is built on a highly customizable platform and just about anything you don't like or feel like needs upgrading can be easily swapped out for better. All in all, this is the pellet pistol I wish I had as a kid!

So customizable , so many options and a community behind this classic ACCURATE (more so than some of my standard firearm's out of the box) the stock front sight is a bit iffy. You van always put white on it to help, or do what many do and check ebay for custom parts. The front sight on this currently was 6 dollars USD and well made. I have more parts added to another 2240 that has a totally different setup it looks like a Ruger Mk II . And another that has a "magazine" that feeds a pellet after each pullback of the charge. There are ways to change almost any part of this airgun and its relatively easy. Some required more work, but most of the investments i put into this were simple without drilling. I kept the stock breech on this, am waiting for a custom made dovetail slide that looks nice and will make mounting scopes more ideal. It sounds dort of, kind of, not exactly but close enough to a subsonic 9mm round turned down a few DB. But is still pretty loud for what it is. This can be remedied with many different parts. I can go on and on about whatnit can do and hoe it can be altered. But out of the box, its incredible for the price. And with the right .22 ammo it can be more dangerous than it looks. Dont jse this for self defense, its not for that you need a proper firearm for that and license. I dont like to mindlessly kill animals, but tests and alternations prove this would be great for varmint control. Which I dont have a problem with . Ive used guns my whole life being born in a war zone. After a while of integrating into life not behind a gun. Really all i knew. This proves to be a gem for plinking and teaching proper gun control. There are a lot of fan-boys and fan-girls for this product and I can certainly see why. I've wanted one of these for a long time, too. But when the manufacturing process does not include a critical inspection of parts alignment, particularly breech mounting holes locations which should be, obviously, lined up with each other and congruent with the center line of the main tube, no matter how much you want to love this gun, the product fails. It don't shoot straight 'cause it ain't. I received mine a few days ago. The barrel band was loose on the main tube and on the barrel even though the band grub screws (2, 1 that anchors the barrel, 1 that anchors the main tube) evidenced blue thread locker. Which means that somebody tried to put it together and couldn't line it up. Inspection revealed the misalignment of the breech with the center line of the main tube and also showed that the transfer port hole was not lined up with the flat on the end of the barrel that indexes the front sight. Wow. Spectacular effort, guys. You blew the barrel spec AND the main tube spec. No way could this thing ever shoot straight. And it didn't. Obviously Crosman manufacturing, more particularly the workers on the shop floor, knew this gun was defective before they packaged it. Because they tried to put it together (blue thread locker) and couldn't line it up. They knew the parts machine work was out of spec. Quality control? I don't think so. Quality control, properly implemented would have consigned this example to the scrap heap by the folks charged with assembling it. But, no, they shipped it to me. Because that's ok, apparently. Most likely because ALL the parts in the batch were like the parts in this example. I am so disgusted with the state of Crosman manufacturing that I won't buy another product from this company until and unless I can be assured that they have the quality processes under control in their factory and in the factories of their suppliers. We're not talking about a machine putting a can of tomato paste in a box here. We are talking about a product put together from parts by human beings and packaged by human beings. Such processes require quality inspections. No excuse is acceptable. No, I did not return the 2240. I saved the trigger group, grips, hammer spring, and various screws and other assorted parts for spares for my 1377, 1322 and 2289, all very good Crosman products that I purchased years ago and which perform extremely well. Any company that is so out of control that they carelessly risk their reputation by supplying sub-standard products like this example, even if it is occasional, will ultimately fail in the marketplace. And frankly, putting such quality-compromised high velocity weapons into this highly litigious American market must be understood to be a significant financial risk to the corporation and it's shareholders. Because there will always be somebody like me who will light you up publicly. Wake up. This ain't rocket surgery. Pathetic.

Came and was delivered next day as advertised. Crosman 2240 arrived in good condition. Other items ordered with it were also in good condition. The pellet gun fires well as expected. Pellet speed chronographed at 444 fps with Crosman Premier pellets 14.3 gr. Still need to do accuracy tests.

***UPDATE 09/1/2023*** It took a little while for me to come back and give my (however brief) thoughts on this plinker! Now I know why they call this the "Rat blaster" over in the UK. For a CO2 powered pistol it is pretty powerful. Consistently, still, getting right at 500FPS on the chrony (for a .22 that's awesome!!). It loves to nom nom the Ruger H-Point Field line pellets. And I find them to be the most accurate with this pistol. It is loud, so unless you have a big backyard, or understanding neighbors, you will draw attention because it is as loud as a 22LR. Will be tinkering with it a little later today and doing a tear-down to check the internals. For accuracy on a budget, you can't go wrong! ***UPDATE 09/1/2023*** ***UPDATE 05/22/2020*** Amazon stepped up and is sending a replacement! Will update review once it arrives and I've gotten a chance to use it a little bit! (Five stars for Amazon CS!) ***UPDATE 05/22/2020*** Would have been five star... If it worked. First co2 put in, hissed, and all the co2 leaked out. Took it apart to see if a ring/seal was blown and was shocked to see the state of all the internal parts. Almost looks like they took all the "reject" parts from the line to assemble my pistol. Very very disappointed. And because of Amazon's policy, nothing can be done. If it was a single part at fault, I'd repair it in a heartbeat. But I'd basically have to replace all the internals. Not worth the effort or money. Very VERY disappointed.
