Overcoming Emotions that Destroy: Practical Help for Those Angry Feelings That Ruin Relationships

I chose to read this book because I have become aware of my own struggles with anger. As I read the book, I learned about where anger comes from (the people, events and situations that cause it), and the most beneficial way to deal with the angry feelings. I enjoyed learning the specifics of where anger starts, and some ways to deal properly with anger. I enjoyed that Scripture references were included to show God's perspective on anger. I also enjoyed reading some personal accounts from the authors on how they properly and improperly handled situations and people that made them angry. In its' entirety, this book is very informational, challenging and inspirational.

Chip Ingram and Becca Johnson have chosen to tackle a subject that very few Christians are willing to discuss: anger. It is an emotion that we all experience, but very few of us, myself include, know how to express it in a healthy and constructive way. All too often, anger can lead to broken relationships, hurt feelings, saying and doing things we later regret, and other unhealthy and sinful behaviors. I believe that anger is one of the biggest struggles in my life. I have made progress, but I still express anger in hurtful and sinful ways more often than I care to admit. There are very few good Christians books out there that deal with the topic of anger honestly. Most of the time, there is little advice beyond "Just don't get angry." But Chip Ingram and Becca Johnson make the very valid point that sometimes anger is a good thing. Anger isn't good or bad. It is just an emotion. A powerful one yes, but all anger is not sinful. If you struggle in the area of anger. If you struggle to understand and identify anger, then this book is for you. But this book doesn't offer quick fixes. But it does offer real-life, practical solutions to dealing with anger. Both men and women who struggle with anger will benefit from reading this book. Honestly, I wish I had read this book years ago.I have to be honest. Reading this book will be painful at times. It forces you to take a hard look and what you may see is not always pretty. This book will also humble you. This is hands down, one of the best Christian books on anger that I've ever read. I have read several other books by Chip Ingram, and they are all top notch. He really does his homework and more importantly, he is faithful to Scripture.Another excellent resource on the subject of anger is "Anger: A Woman's Forbidden Emotion" by H Norman Wright and Gary Oliver

I've always been considered (for the most part) a very laid back person......that is, until I lose my temper.Then people say I have that whole "Jekyll / Hyde" mystique going on.It's not something I'm particularly proud of and I believe that if you truly want to make changes.... then "there's an app for that"!No...just kidding! :>)On the serious side, this book is an invaluable tool to help folks understand (from a Christian perspective....and no, it's not a "Bible thumpers agenda" but more so, addressing the issue from the perspective of Biblical writings and ideology) that anger is a natural, God-given emotion just like any other emotion we have. In and of itself, anger is neither good or bad but rather HOW we channel that emotion that dictates the outcome of what makes it positive or negative.The contents of this book are very insightful into the types of anger we experience as well as the reasons why we feel them and more importantly how to better understand, deal with, and finally overcome the emotions that really complicate our lives and/or relationships with others. Great read and very much recommended

My daughter bought the workbook to this book home for us to do together. I bought the book to go with it. I must say I learned things about myself and the anger I was having. So, thankful I got it. God has been delivering me from my years of anger. well worth the money.

I am half the way of this book and I enjoy it, I think I understand much more and it helped me to look at things from distance. However, I took 1 star away because I do not like that the authors keep bringing God into it. I appreciate science. I would recommend this with 5 stars to deeply religious people for whom God is important part of their life, but for me, as non believer, it sounds pretty rediculous at some times and I find it not necessary.

This book is amazing. My husband and I are doing it together and it’s helping us how to control our anger and we have been doing so much better since we have started this book and learning what adds flames to the fire.

The questions and exercises at the end of the chapter challenge you to put what you learn into action. Very helpful to see how anger has affected my life.

What a well written and very hard hitting book! I'm a fairly introspective person and pride myself on knowing what I'm thinking and feeling and why but this book pointed out some things to me that I hadn't really thought about before! I guess it has been somewhat of a humbling experience and has opened my eyes to some of the bad habits that I have and the issues that I have with anger. Chip and Becca work well together in writing this book and are very direct but loving in their approach to helping the reader deal with their personal issues and I think they could not have written it any better! Very good book!
