Has anyone tried both this unit and the plunger type? How did they compare?

I don't know what a plunger is. all i know is we tried another brand mandolin and my wife feels this is the best constructed and safest she's ever used.

can it make french fries?

Of course, the thickness of the french fries is about 5mm, our slicer can cut strips, slices, shreds, and cubes of any thickness within the range of 0.1-8mm, without the need to switch blades. The operation is as follows: just turn the big knob on the back to the 5mm scale, and turn any small knob 360 degrees clockwise.
