binoculars Safari UltraSharp 8x22 - German quality optics, compact, light, ideal for travel, hiking, sports and nature observation

Delighted with these! Researched carefully before purchasing as I have poorer eyesight in eye than the other - I have macular deneration and wear specs for short and long distance. With these binos I don’t wear specs (unlike with my previous larger binos) as I can easily adjust for different sight in each eye. They are small and very lightweight but appear robust and are easy to hold without any shaking. I’m pleased I opted for 8 x 22 and not the 10 x 25 version as whilst I’m yet to try them on our hols in Africa, I tested them in our long garden spotting birds, butterflies as well as horses in the fields beyond in very clear detail. I am well-impressed with the colours and clarity and the excellent field of vision. Ideal for women, may be too small for larger hands. Provided bag a little larger than needed but I’m unlikely to use it except for storage.

superb instrument excellent transaction

I bought these binoculars as I wanted a small pair to carry in my pocket when walking my dog. I already have a pair of Nikon Travellite EX 8x25 binoculars, which are excellent but just a little bit too bulky to carry around in a pocket. After trying two "budget" pairs that had good reviews on Amazon but which frankly were not good (both had badly aligned optics), I decided to pay a bit more and go for these Steiner Safaris. I had read several good reviews about Steiner binoculars, and these live up to the reputation. The image is sharp, bright and clear with no noticeable colour cast and very little fringing, and the focussing smooth with good dioptre adjustment on one eyepiece. The eyepieces have fold-down eye cups for spectacle wearers, I wear glasses and find the binoculars easy to use both with and without my glasses on. The construction of the binoculars is good quality, and they are more compact than I expected. For the extra cost and bulk, the Nikons do have a slight edge over the Steiners, with a slightly brighter image.

I think this is an amazing buy. It is perfect for the purpose that we intended. My family loves to cycle on outdoor trails in Scotland, but I'm teaching my kids to focus on much more than just cycling. We stop regularly to identify birds, or just explore distant vistas. I have my trusty old Swarovski el 8.5x42 and my wife her Nikon Monarch 10x42. But I decided to buy my two daughters, 8 and 5 years old respectively, something smaller and easier to operate. So, when I received this Steiner 8x22, I was afraid that it's image quality would be far below than what the girls could view through our bigger ones. But I was pleasantly surprised. Yes- the big ones are superior in every optical aspect; but this tiny pair of binoculars deliver smashing images- for its size. They are sharp and clear. Focusing is easy and smooth. It's very quick "on the draw": You see something; you stop the bike; you raise the Steiner- and within seconds your objects jumps into crystal clear resolution. I ended up buying another one. And yes, daddy is so chuffed with its ease of handling and wonderful practicality, that he's ordering the 10x42 for himself. I;m sure my Swarovski wouldn't mind having a wee brother on the trail. The only criticism I could perhaps mention, is that it is not perfect for dark, shadowy areas. There the bigger, more expensive binoculars definitely outshine them. But that is just logical: Bigger glass will yield brighter images. But then again, for the purposes I bought these binoculars, that's not a big issue. We don't cycle with the kids in near-darkness. During normal daylight hours, these Steiners are just perfect: Small and light- quick and easy to focus. And worth every penny!

So, i tried three pairs of compacts binoculars. A budget K&F Concept 10x25, the similar priced Viking Badger 10x25, and these. These are by FAR the sharpest of all three by a long way. They also feel the best to use. The faults i read of are: 1) The eye cups rotate and may perish over time if you are folding them back a lot 2) The front glass optic moves back and forth when focusing, and they have put some grease in the front to aid this. This grease apparently gets on the lens over time when cleaning, and also may potentially fail over long term use. 3) They dont fold up completely. 1 and 2 may be a concern, but 3 really isn't that bad. However, the image sharpness, quality, and magnification is way above the other two i tried. They also feel the best to use in the hand, so it's a no brainer. The others have gone back and i'm keeping these.

bought as a gift , and compared to my existing collection of binoculars (pentax, minolta, hertel/reusse) they are clear bright and wide - ideal for quick 'pocket-to-eye' use. We need them when boating to identify hazards in the water ahead and navigation marks. Sturdy quality - should last well.

I was decided to buy this since im living in a coastal area where good scenery are available everywhere you look. And i have tried this bino back then in Philippines where my uncle have one, and its a Steiner military version. It was so cool to use the bino. So upon checking all the items, and carefully studying every one, i decided to buy this Ultrasharp 10x22. And i wasn't wrong w/ my decision. It was easy to use, all clear views even its over 50-80kms away. The price is right. It is cheaper compare to buying in my country. I love it. Thanks Steiner

Pros They are light weight. There is no noticeable chromatic aberration. The image is reasonably sharp. The field of view is impressive for the size. The image size at the eye piece is a good. So the image circle is a good size compared to the black ring around it. Cheap bins tend to have a smaller image circle, even though the magnification can be high. They are comfortable to hold. The exterior rubber grip means you are unlikely to accidentally drop them. They are very easy to align with your line of sight. This is impressive and must be due to the design of ergonomics. Cons I would not call them compact. The barrels do not fold all the way together. There is not a great deal of difference between full open and closed. This means the bag is quite large. You would need very large coat pockets to accommodate the bins in the bag. Having said that, the bag does tend to crush the eye pieces. The near focus I would say is 3.5m at best. I imagine will tend to vary a little from user to user though. There is backlash in the focusing mechanism of about 15 degrees rotation. So if you go just past the focus and turn the focus back, there is about 15 degrees of turn before anything changes. The wheel seems to move a lever in a slot and the slot has a larger gap than the level. You can just about feel the lever make contact with either side of the slot. Not the end of the world but annoying. If you look up into a tree and the light is in front off to one side, you get washout, the image looks misty. You can counter this by holding the end of the bins with thumb and finger and using the rest of your hand to shield the lenses, from the side light. Again, this is not the end of the world but not great. To sum up, the image quality is generally good, great field of view, they are light weight but they are bulky for compacts, the focusing mechanism is sloppy in use, the near focus is further than expected. Would I buy them again given the choice now, no probably not. Will I stop using these ones, no, they are good bins in general, the image quality is good but they do have issues. Compared to other compacts they feel big. There are alternatives at this price.

Ordered December 25, paid extra for faster shipping as my last amazon order was not even shipped until two weeks after ordering, so did not want to go through that again. These are made in Germany, shipped from Poland and arrived December 31, before the earliest promised date. The binoculars are entry level Steiner and since I have not had any experience with the brand I was not sure what to expect. They are well made, and clearer and brighter than the Tasco I have been using, although not significantly so. Very happy at this price point and would buy again.
