RYA Sail Logbook

Great log book for tracking your sails. I was impressed with the overall quality and the information which assists in tracking your various sailing trips. While not an experienced sailor, this will help me to chart my growing sailing experience.

I have tried lots of log book formats,and have also gone down the "print one yourself" route. This is the best of the bunch, looks and works well.

I was impressed with the quality of construction and printing of this book, with nice thick paper so pen can't bleed through; good considering this is one of the cheaper log books on the market. It's perhaps not universally known but maritime law states that any voyage should start with a written passage plan including a weather report, the relevant tides and the members of crew on board. The log book provides that prompt to make sure you include this information. In addition there are some pages of general navigation information in the front of the book and instructions how to fill the book in. This actually annoyed me, because I want the completed log book to have my personal stamp; this makes it feel like a dutifully completed RYA exercise book. I have already found that I am constrained by the layout which is quite prescriptive. There is a double page spread for every outing, which seems wasteful when doing a series of day sails. I sail in an area of extremely complex tides and the space allocated is insufficient to note down all the relevant information. I would have liked more space for notes. However, I concede it would be difficult to design a logbook to suit all and this takes a pretty good stab at it. All in all, it's a nice book but next time I am inclined to look for a more minimalist approach so that I can tailor the log to my own needs.
