An Introduction to Statistical Learning: with Applications in Python (Springer Texts in Statistics) Hardcover – 1 July 2023

I have both R and Python versions. I’d recommend getting both to reinforce (pun intended) the ideas, techniques and methods.

This book covers the math of machine learning, from simple 1-variable linear regression to deep learning. It’s excellent, with the level pitched just right (in a software engineer with 30 years experience, but not a mathematician). A good understanding of high-school maths is really all you need, and the pace is just right for me. One key selling point it the inclusion of simpler models - I knew of the relationship between linear regression and DL but this book actually shows you the logical progression in the technology. Note the pdf is available from the publisher for free, but the hardback book is well worth it.
