Essentials of Swedish Grammar: A Practical Guide to the Mastery of Swedish

This book is an excellent, comprehensive, easy-to-understand compendium of Swedish grammar, and should meet the needs of every student of the Swedish language. The initial copy I received from Amazon had 30 defective pages, and by defective I mean illegible : pages almost entirely black, pages that were double- or even triple-printed with two or three different, overlapping texts on them. It was unusable. I asked Amazon to send me a replacement book, if they could find a defect-free copy, and 48 hours later a free replacement copy arrived in the mail. This copy is totally defect-free ! It is perfect ! THANK YOU, AMAZON, FOR SUCH GREAT SERVICE !

(written by my thirteen-year-old daughter)When I was 12 years old I decided that I wanted to learn Swedish. Since Swedish was going to be my first foreign language and I was learning it by myself, I figured that I should spend my money wisely and only buy a few items. Along with a Swedish-English/engelsk-svensk Dictionary and a book on conjugating Swedish verbs, I bought this. I'd say that if I had to choose only one of those three items to buy, it would be this one because it explained the grammar of all sorts in a manner that even a 12-year-old could understand.. When first I decided that I wanted to learn Swedish I read up on it and learned a bit about its rules. I was especially daunted by the prospect of learning the definite and plural forms of the word, which confused me to no end. However when I read this book I understood it perfectly, along with other things that confused me, like "rolig", "roligt", and "roliga", for example.I have had this book for a little over one year, and I have read it through, and still go back sometimes to refresh myself. I must say that I do not regret buying this book!(By the way, its size made it perfect for carrying around---many a morning before school I spent reading this book throughout last year.)My only woe is that they do not have the same book for Finnish..!

As another reviewer said as well, this is a companion book for my as I work through Duolingo. That program doesn't get into grammar, per se. I do hope an editor of the book reads this as they forgot "W" in the alphabet at the back of the book.

I am so pleased with this book. I know I'll keep it and refer to itfor a long time. It is so well put together. It's clear and conciseand really does teach you the essential rules of Swedish grammarby explaining things and then giving examples. You can open it upwhenever you have even just a few minutes to spare, and you will learnsomething new every time.When you go from curiosity about a language to beginning to study itseriously, you need good reference books like this. These days theinternet is very helpful for doing research on just about anything,and there's a lot of good sites that help with language learning,but good luck finding this kind of information there. This book willgive you the basic framework to understand how sentences are put togetherand will take you past memorizing words and phrases. It will teachyou what you need to know to begin communicating in the language,and will nicely fill in the gaps of your knowledge of Swedish fromother sources.If you want to learn Swedish, you simply cannot go wrong with this book!

This book is worth buying. It explains a lot of the ways the sentences are constructed in Swedish. I needed a more precise explanation in English. This book breaks down the sentences, use of verbs, subject etc in a way that is very easy to understand. Its an easy read, has a helpful number chart in the back for numbers/ counting, not a lot of fluff or useless writing, and its to the point. I am happy I bought it. This book along with my Unabridged Swedish dictionary and 2,000 Common Swedish verbs has made my Swedish language class easier. If you are someone who likes to know "WHY" you are writing this or that...then buy this book.

This is the best Swedish grammar book out there. It is very concise, and skips all the nonsense and difficult to understand wording. It has everything you need to know, and is not a heavy, hard to handle book.I had the older version that my Uncle who married a Swedish woman gave me, and I loved it so much, but it was falling apart from his usage (which was many years ago), so I had to buy myself a new one and was so glad I did.Great great book.

This is a great supplement to learning language software. I'm learning the core language with Rosetta Stone, but I'm the type of person who wants to know WHY something is said a certain way, so I picked up Swedish Essentials of Grammar. Simple and easy to understand, the authors consistently point out the similarities and differences between English & Swedish, making it a great reminder of the English rules of English grammar as well. It's a perfect complement to learning the language.

I was looking for something with excercises too. This explaing the grammar but maybe too advanced for a beginner!
