Description
You know it in your gut--training and development is valuable and worthwhile. But as a trainer, you need to prove this fact over and over to clients focused on bottom-line results. While most training evaluation methods are too elaborate, too complex, too costly, too difficult to explain, or worse, produce data that nobody believes, Telling Training's Story offers a simple, compelling way of evaluating training's impact: The Success Case Method (SCM). Based on careful analysis of participants' first-person accounts of their experiences in a training initiative, SCM doesn't just measure the impact of training, but pinpoints the very factors that make or break training success. Filled with examples, illustrations, tools, and checklists, Telling Training's Story not only shares the power of the Success Case Method to evaluate training, it also offers practical step-by-step guidelines for increasing the ROI of future learning and performance initiatives.

The "how to" for evaluating training success
Many factors influence whether training succeeds in providing employees with a new tool or skill. Robert O. Brinkerhoff explains how to evaluate the success of your training programs and shows you how to distinguish between well functioning areas and those that need improvement. The book explains the "success case method" of evaluating training. Brinkerhoff presents real-world case studies to show how various companies used the program and explores the results. getAbstract recommends this book to trainers and to organizations that want a process for proving the value of training.

Excellent as a starting point and auditing system, but long term, too bureaucratic
I have just finished reading Robert O. Brinkerhoff's 2006 book, Telling Training's Story. This book focuses on the 'Success Case Method' to evaluate and assess the impact and effectiveness of training.I think it's an interesting method which seeks to survey and analyse the experience of learning participants against a number of important factors, included in these are;The effectiveness if the training function. The role and contribution of line managers. The working of systems and processes.Contribution and support of line management. What immediately struck me about this approach was the invaluable contribution it could make as an audit or assessment tool of any existing or current developmental system to see where the strengths and weaknesses lie. Following this an action plan for rectification or targets for focus could and should be developed. In this context I can really see this being a valuable method and process.Longer term however it seems to me that the process is unnecessarily complex and I know exactly the response that would be encountered from certain stakeholders in most organisations if it were persisted with. As a starting analysis point and review of the Training and Development function I think it's excellent, as an ongoing strategy it is top heavy and unnecessarily bureaucratic when compared for instance to the Kearns strategy.

A must read for L & D professionals!
Well written and good case examples! One of the few well-researched and well-written books on the topic of training measurement and evaluation.

Clearly written, clever ideas
This is a great book. It clearly describes a training evaluation methodology in enough step-by-step detail to be able to turn around and apply it after reading the book. In addition to describing specific examples of the method's use during the book, there are also four case studies at the end...this helped me see ways to apply this method from a variety of angles. The method seems straight-forward and practical, and the book is reader-friendly. I've already recommended this to others.
