If I clip this on my dogs' collars, will it be bright enough to light our path? Or is is just bright enough to be seen?

Its purpose is to be seen not to see by. Maybe the white one on steady not blinking will throw light on the path. Probably not where you want to go versus where fido is sniffing about.

How does the light turn on?

You turn the red light cover to the right to go on and reverse for off

My battery died, does anyone know exactly what type of battery is needed to replace?

2032 batteries x 2. You can buy those just about anywhere. Stack 2 together and you're good to go, ABSOLUTELY NOT NECESSARY to buy replacement batteries from this manufacturer.
